Day 1

Today was day one of our expedition with our journey on figuring out microplastics and pollution. Today we gathered data by cleaning up two beaches along with reaching out to two other scientists at Woods Hole oceanographic Institute by the names of Dr. Michael Moore and Jim Flynn. We gathered around 10lbs of trash all together and plan on gathering more throughout the week. Coming across all of the different types s of trash give someone an outlook on how the oceans pollution is being created. For example the majority of todays trash was rope. There was an abundance of fishing vessel rope that was on the beach that needs to be picked up. This is a huge issue in the ecosystem due to the facts that it can be dangerous to the wildlife. Another large common piece of trash that was found today was styrofoam. Lots of weathered styrofoam that once you picked up it would crumble and be very brittle. The coming weathered plastics were come across such as parts of fishing traps to bottle caps although there were some pieces that when picked up could also crumble meaning they have been in the water for a long time. This makes you think more about how the plastics are bing broken down in the ocean and how it’s affecting the wildlife’s as they could eat these broken disk pieces. Overall today was a successful day and look forward to the next day of our senior project.
